Tubing = Awesome

The summer can get kind of boring with little to no waves and hot sticky weather. A great activity to get down with on hot summer days is tubing. I have been going with my friends all summer up the brandywine for some tubing adventures. Here is a simple check list of things we make sure to consider before jumping into the water.

Planning and transportation is key. You want to make sure you have enough tubes and a couple repair patches for the trip. The route should be planned in advance with a specific drop off and pick up. Leave on car at the drop off that can at least drive back all of the drivers in your crew. We parked a van down the river, so we were all able to fit. Remember when planning your route that low water means slow water and people getting stuck. This is fine, but you won't make good time if it has not rained recently, so don't park the cars too far apart.

Bringing coolers is a great idea. After much trial and error I have found that using small raft (aka the beer barge) to carry everyones coolers works the best. This way you don't have everyone trying to float multiple rafts. You can also tie off a bunch of ropes from the main cooler raft making it easier to keep everyone together. Loading up your coolers with snacks is also a great idea. We have had some slow trips and nothing cools a mutiny quicker than pulling out a family pack of twizlers or chips.

The gear is simple. You can get away with most floating devices. My friends and I have used everything from inflatable pool toys to inflatable mattresses (inflatable dolls don't really work that well). Water socks or flip flops are also key. I have never gone without having to walk some section of the river, and covering your feet can make a difference.

Besides all the prep it takes to get the show on the road tubing is super simple. Plan the route, find something that floats, and have a great time. It is one of the best ways to enjoy a hot day, and you will notice it costs next to nothing (sans beer and tubes).
