Becoming a member, The Surfrider FoundationThe most important thing you can do as a surfer is become a member of the Surfrider Foundation. This is a great organization. Basically they get behind every surfer and his or her right to beach access and water quality. There are local chapters all around the US, but you don't have to belong to a chapter to become a member. If any organization will get behind people from the inland being responsible for how their actions affect the oceans it is this organization.
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit organization that will work to keep our oceans clean through activism. This means if we realize that something is going on in our community that affects everyones enjoyment of the ocean, these are the people to turn to. We live in a state that influences what happens in the Atlantic shore communities greatly. Every time you put a toxic chemical into the ground is becomes part of the watershed and will probably contribute to a surfer's sinus infection or worse. We live where water issues start and we can do something about it.
Another great thing about becoming a member is that you get a subscription to Making Waves. This newsletter gives you insight into what is happening in your area and around the world. If this newsletter does not inspire you to become involved it probably won't happen. Plus they have great articles and interesting topics.
We need to show the boys and girls that live in the coastal communities that we care about what happens to the places we visit. It is hard to call someone names when they are trying to help your community. Being a member of this organization is always a large point of pride for me and it will be for you too after you join. Maybe we can start to organize our own chapter in the near future. The also have different levels of donation for those of you on a limited budget (aka student rate).
